MEDIA ADVISORY: ZOMBIE DUCK RALLY
Saturday September 30, 2010 (Edmonton) - On Saturday, October 30 at 11:00, a rally will be held to highlight the people of Alberta’s growing concern over the tar sands toxic tailings ponds accountability at the governmental level. This rally will demand a moratorium be placed on new approvals for tailings ponds, including the proposed TOTAL North Joclyn Mine Project, and the immediate phase out and cleanup of existing toxic tailings ponds.
Who: Sierra Club Prairie, Greenpeace, Guest Speakers, and members of the public.
What: Rally with Several Guest Speakers, Music, all with a Zombie Halloween Theme
When: Saturday September 30 2010, 11:00
Where: Wilbert McIntyre Park 104 St & 83 Ave (Across from Strathcona Farmer's Market) Edmonton, Alberta
With the latest duck death scandal, it is becoming increasingly apparent that government accountability is needed in placing a moratorium on further tailings pond approvals and in working towards the phase out and cleanup of existing toxic tailings ponds, as this is not only an issue about the environment, but about the people and wildlife living and dying downstream from the tailings ponds. The ERCB public stance of giving “flexibility” to tar sands corporations in their responsibility to cleanup these ponds amounts to no more than a free pass when it comes to toxic cleanup, something which we fear will be passed to the Albertan taxpayer. It is time for accountability!
