What is "Grassroots"?

A grassroots movement is one driven by the values, needs and vision of everyday people in a local community. The term implies that the creation of the movement and the group supporting it are natural and spontaneous and grounded in advocating for a better future for their community, not just individuals. This highlights the differences between a grassroots movement and a movement that is orchestrated by top down power structures. Members of grassroots movements are everyday people ranging from lawyers and doctors to construction workers and musicians. When everyday people come together in a grassroots movement, they can have an affect both locally and globally to create a safer, healthier and more just future.
